The Subconscious Mind

"A Master knows that each and every action is caused by the self, and is a reflection of the self" -- John Payne

Subconscious has been traditionally defined as follows: “That portion of mental activity of which the individual has little or no conscious perception.” - Webster's New World Dictionary, College Edition.

In our culture, the subconscious mind has been given terrific powers over the consciousness of the individual; it is said that from within your subconscious can come horrible emotions and impulses, forcing you to do things you don't want to do.

The subconscious mind was popularized by Sigmund Freud who, in order to explain neurotic and irrational behavior, developed the idea that consciousness is layered into unconscious, preconscious, and conscious. Because neurotic behavior has no rational explanation, it made sense to Freud that some psychic events must percolate below the surface of the mind; then, like a cancer, explode into conscious awareness. For some reason this idea has found wide acceptance, but vibrationally, it makes no sense at all. Only something that is given conscious attention can get bigger. The pot that sits on low heat will never boil, only when the dial is consciously turned up can enough energy be imparted to the mixture! In other words, things just don’t happen all by themselves. Something that is beneath the surface of your awareness can have no effect upon you, because you are not aware of it!

The subconscious mind does not exist. There is not anywhere a part of your consciousness that is inaccessible to you. What passes for the subconscious mind are usually habitual patterns of thought and belief, and sometimes, thoughts that impinge on you from mass consciousness, brought to you by the Law of Vibration and the Law of Attraction .

Mass Consciousness

I define mass consciousness as the collective conscious thought of the human species. In studying different cultures, the psychologist Carl Jung noticed the universality of many themes, patterns, stories and images. These same images frequently appeared in the dreams of his patients. Jung postulated a “collective unconscious” for mankind as a species, which contain psychological archetypes. These archetypes are, according to Jung, imprints or patterns that every human being inherits when he or she is born. Mass consciousness just gives the Jungian idea a little fillip. We replace the collective un–conscious (ignorance) with the collective consciousness (awareness). In this way we transform human beings from biological automatons to mindful sovereigns, in charge of their personal lives.

Consciousness exists independent of physical body's. This is an assumption we make throughout these essays, and this porinciple has been understood for millennia by every culture on our planet. Thought is the product of consciousness, invisible and indetectable by instruments, but accesible to life. [1] Each thought is a little vibration or quanta of energy, associated with a universal field of thought. [2] Now consider the idea that thoughts have an independent existence. This is not such a strange concept if you consider that a photon has zero mass, but yet is the basic unit (quantum) of electromagnetic energy (light). One might argue that it is possible to observe photons; however, it is also possible to pick up on another’s thoughts. Intuition and ESP are recognized phenomena that depend upon transfer of information without the use of machines, and independent of direct contact with any of the five recognized human senses.

Consider that there are presently over 6 billion humans on the earth. Imagine how many thoughts enter the collective conscious every day! We are, literally, immersed in a sea of thought. Imagine that similar thoughts combine to form streams, or rivers. The more powerful the thought stream, the easier it is to tap into. For example, thoughts of hatred and violence are very powerful, as are thoughts of love and understanding. Your conscious vibrational orientation determines the range of thought you can receive. A happy person will pick up on cheerful thoughts, and an angry person will pick up on thoughts of hatred and revenge. So instead of a collective unconscious, we have a sophisticated, dynamic tapestry of vibration that changes its composition in every moment!

Mental Inertia

It’s easy to see that once a pattern of thought is established, change requires you to overcome vibrational inertia. Habitual thought is simply thought you keep thinking over and over again. Pretty soon this becomes a belief. Beliefs do not necessarily have anything to do with the truth! That is why beliefs are often irrational, for they are simply ways of thinking that become comfortable.

If a pattern of thought becomes ingrained, it is difficult to change, due to "mental inertia." Because thoughts are vibrational, they have energy and force. When one wants to change, it requires a conscious effort to shift one's orientation. That's why the subconscious explanation is favored by some, for it explains away a person's responsibility for their failures. It's a sort of comforting crutch to lean on. However, a decision right NOW is more powerful than past decisions, just as the note on a piano is the loudest at the moment of striking. So all you have to do is begin and it will get easier and easier. Each and every human being is a powerful, conscious creator of his or her state of being, and of his or her experience.

Defense lawyers sometimes use the ‘subconscious’ in an attempt to explain away the reprehensible actions of their clients (the insanity defense, or, "the devil made me do it!") and some use it to argue for their limitations. People object to such lawyers tricks, because we instinctively understand that someone else cannot control the thoughts in your own head!

The subconscious mind also finds favor with those who regard human beings as biological automatons, whose self awareness is caused by firing neurons. It is even said by such that because sensory input is largely beyond conscious awareness, most of our thoughts and actions are beyond our control. These deluded and materialistic philosophies, no matter in what guise they masquerade, postulate human beings as victims of their own senses! Those who believe in such nonsense are easily led; cannon fodder for propagandists, dogmatists, and other manipulators.

Even if we grant the existence of subconscious thought, by definition it has very little power. It’s the vibrations you activate consciously which have power. Conscious thought is analogous to the struck piano key, subconscious thought to the vibrations of previous notes that are dying away. The powerful vibration always swallows the weaker one, so decisions made in the present moment are always more powerful than past decisions. Subconscious thought is, by definition, so subtle that it is beneath your awareness. If it’s below your awareness, you’re not aware of it! And if you’re not aware of it, how can it affect you? The answer is, it can’t UNLESS you make a conscious decision, in the present moment, to act upon it. Therefore, all thought which leads to action is conscious thought.

"If there is no subconscious mind." you might say, "then explain hypnosis. People can be programmed to do all sorts of crazy things." Well, let's agree that a person must agree to be hypnotized. -- you cannot hypnotize someone who is kicking and screaming -- a person must consciously agree to become affected by the hypnotizer. In a universe of free will, you have leave to believe and act in any way you see fit. "What about the guy who is drugged against his will and hypnotized?" Well, you can't be drugged against your will. If you've met such an evil person, you have been consciously resonating to negative thoughts and outcomes for a long time. You don't meet up with criminals like that without sending out a very strong vibrational signal to the universe. Sorry, but you are in charge of your own thoughts and beliefs!

"The Devil Made me do it!"

What about strong impulses or motivations that seem to suddenly come out of nowhere? Aren't these subconscious in origin?

I have made fun of defense lawyers who defend those who commit crimes of passion, but it's really no laughing matter. If you've ever been "out of control," you know that it's possible to simply lose conscious volition, and act, seemingly, under the influence of unknown forces. This occurs because thoughts and emotions are vibrational. Once you establish a strong vibrational proclivity, you become a powerful attracting magnet for more of the same. You actually create a vibrational envelope of thought energy around you! This stuff is real, folks! Like a snowball rolling downhill, you pick up more and more similar thoughts from mass consciousness, and soon you have established so much momentum that you don't feel you can stop. However, you have created the whole thing! You started the ball rolling, and kept it rolling. The good news is that -- unlike the gigantic snowball -- you can break out of your downhill slide at any time, by making another conscious decision. The best news of all is that mindful living and conscious creation of your life will prevent such situations from ever occurring.

Here's an example from my own experience. One day last winter I was watching a hockey game. One of our players (I am a Detroit Red Wings fan) got hit from behind and knocked to the ice. All of a sudden, an impulse rose within me: I wanted to kill the guy who did it. I literally began pounding the carpet with my fists, and screaming at the TV!

Now where did that come from? I wondered. This impulse seemed to come directly from within me, but at the same time, it felt foreign, and I assumed it came from within my subconscious. Then I realized that I had already been irritated by dirty play from the opposing team, and the ref's refusal to call penalties. The Red Wings team is very skilled, and opponets often try to "rough us up" to get us off our game. So I was already oriented towards retaliation. I realized that that hostile impulse wasn't mine! It was someone else's, but I had picked up on it. Essentially, my vibrational orientation had become strong enough to open a gateway into mass consciousness.

What would happen to a person who continually focused on violence? Well, he or she would build up more and more energy around that, helped along by the thought streams from mass consciousness, and would eventually act upon those impulses. When the buildup of energy gets strong enough, a critical threshold is reached. But this process is the opposite of stimulus-response! When a neuron fires, for example, it does so because of an external stimulus. For those who believe that consciousness comes from firing neurons, human beings are nothing but stimulus-response robots. The vibrational universe philosophy, however, turns that on its head, and postulates a pro-active model of thought and awareness, based upon a correct definition of consciousness, and placing individuals as Sovereigns. You get to decide the direction of your life!

In short, what passes for the subconscious mind is an impinging thought from mass consciousness. The content of that impinging thought corresponds to your current conscious vibrational orientation.

A “subconscious” thought arrives in your conscious awareness in the following way:

(1) You set up a vibrational signal through your thoughts, feelings and attitudes about something. In my case, I set up the idea of retaliation in a very powerful way, after I saw the player hammered unfairly to the ice.

(2) The Law of Vibration and the Law of' 'Like attracts like' go to work and immediately puts you in vibrational contact with thoughts and vibrations which match it, from the mass consciousness. This process operates at the speed of thought, which is to say, instantaneously.

(3) A thought or impulse then pops into your conscious awareness.

This thought isn't even your thought! In other words, it's not your stuff. It's someone else's stuff. But you set yourself up to contact it, by your conscious vibrational orientation.

To understand that the subconscious mind is a phantom, perform the following experiment: the next time you feel really good, check to see if there are any subconscious thoughts, or if you feel any subconscious impulses. You won’t find any! That’s because a subconscious thought only appears when you reach the lower states of emotion. And you can’t reach the lower emotions without a conscious decision to do so. You are powerful. No one can think or choose for you!

If every person on earth thinks ten thoughts every day (a pretty conservative estimate I'd say) then every day there are 60 billion new thoughts added to the mass consciousness! There are streams of thought associated with every conceivable subject and emotion, on this planet of free will, from torture and depression to selflessness and joy.

It's up to us which of these streams we will contact, for by our conscious choices we set up the vibrational signal to which the universe is responding in every moment.

Far from being subconscious, all of the thoughts we encounter every day have been created consciously, and have been mis–assigned to the subconscious. The subconscious mind is a convenient scapegoat for those who don’t want to be mindful, or take responsibility for their actions. Such a concept places you at effect–point, instead of source–point. Consciousness is always at source–point!

What often passes for subconscious thought are those thoughts at the edge of your vibrational signal range. Sort of like something at the edges of your peripheral vision: It's there, but you can barely make it out.

Example: You have a job interview tomorrow and you're a little nervous. You really want the job and are more than qualified, but you know there are 3 others interviewing. Normally you interview very well, but as you walk into the office there are a few thoughts at the edges of your awareness, probaly from others who have interviewed before you: “I hope I don't screw up,” “What if he doesn't like me?” etc. You shake your head and wonder, “where is all this crap coming from?”

Well, it's just the Law of Vibration and the Law of 'Like attracts like' at work, reflecting back to you the content of your own vibrational orientation!

You can either go with the new stream of thought and get more and more nervous, or laugh and say to yourself, “I always do well and I will this time,” and regain your old confidence. Living mindfully is essential in a vibrational universe!

It is always possible to control the impulses which come to us from mass consciousness by getting a grip on what we are choosing to focus attention upon. You are cause, not effect.

Almost all of us have placed our focus on the cesspool of life at one time or another, so we have all contributed to the mass consciousness! Do not balme the 'other guy',' for all of us have been angry and violent. We all have wanted to kill someone. And of course, we have also contributed to the beauty, the harmony, and the love which exists on our planet. Literally, we are all in this together.

Your thoughts, choices, and emotions are of paramount importance. Mankind has imprisoned itself in a vast jail of self-limiting thought. But individuals can break free from this self-imposed prison, by understanding the laws of the universe and the power of their own choices!

You are at source-point in every single aspect of your life.

A wise man once said, “A Master knows that each and every action is caused by the self, and is a reflection of the self.” (John Payne. John is an extraordinarily gifted and inspirational writer).

Freedom is a state of mind, literally, a conscious orientation toward the things that are wanted in life. Understanding that the subconscious cannot rise up and bite you begets a feeling of power and greater self–confidence. There are those who want you to believe in your limitations, who want you to think that you are just a stimulus-response machine. That is crap, ladies and gentlemen. Belief in the subconscious mind is one of those self-limitng tools, and will put you to sleep. That is precisely what propagandists and other manipulators want. But I am here to encourage you to wake up! If only a small percentage more of our population began living mindfully, we could change the direction of our societies in an astonishingly short period of time.

[1] We postulate consciousness as a virtual, creative principle, and define a virtual function f(t) --> q, which translates a thought, t, into the physical universe as the basic unit of perception, a quanta, q. Thus are quanta continually created, and the universe continually expanded.

[2] Quantum physicist David Bohm postulated that matter itself is the explicate manifestation of a subtle, invisible, implicate order [3]. Peter Higgs suggested that physical particles gain mass through their interaction with the Higgs field, an invisible, immeasurable substrate. Haramein and Rauscher suggest that matter is a result of the relationship between the spin dynamics of space-time and black holes, and that consciousness itself has to do with black hole phenomena. What is a black hole? A singularity, a physical impossibility, with infinite density and zero radius. Such is thing is non-physical, as is consciousness. [4] ).
