{"id":2476,"date":"2023-08-28T13:32:30","date_gmt":"2023-08-28T17:32:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/kjmaclean.com\/wordpress\/?p=2476"},"modified":"2023-09-01T11:29:22","modified_gmt":"2023-09-01T15:29:22","slug":"maui-fires-update","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kjmaclean.com\/wordpress\/maui-fires-update\/","title":{"rendered":"Maui Fires Update"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>If true, the &#8220;downed power lines caused the Maui fires&#8221; theory is not valid.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>(Reuters) -Hawaiian Electric\u2019s shares jumped more than 40% on Monday after the utility said its power lines in West Maui had been shut down for more than six hours before wildfires started in the area during the afternoon.<\/p><p>&#8230;The county said downed power lines started the wildfires that destroyed the historic town of Lahaina earlier this month, killing at least 115 people and displacing hundreds more.<\/p><p>Hawaiian Electric said on Monday that a morning fire on Aug. 8 caused by power lines that fell in high winds was subsequently reported \u201c100% contained\u201d and later declared \u201cextinguished\u201d by the Maui County Fire Department.<\/p><p>The utility said another afternoon fire started in the same area more than six hours after all of its power lines in West Maui had been de-energized, which could not be contained by the fire department and spread out of control toward Lahaina.<\/p><p>\u201cWe were surprised and disappointed that the County of Maui rushed to court even before completing its own investigation,\u201d said Shelee Kimura, president and CEO of Hawaiian Electric.<\/p><cite>https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/hawaiian-elec-lawsuit\/update-3-hawaiian-electric-says-power-lines-were-shut-off-hours-before-wildfire-idUSL1N3A90GW<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>If true, the &#8220;downed power lines caused the Maui fires&#8221; theory is not valid.
